Sport- Specific Training

We are the official training site of the Pittsburgh Junior Penguins Hockey Team!

Strengthen and train your body as a whole and develop yourself as a leaner, stronger, and more powerful athlete.  Depending on which sport you play some movements are used much more often than others, and those movements require different muscle groups.  Our trainers can help you to target which muscle groups may be weak and need additional attention which helps keep you from getting injured by overusing stronger muscles to compensate.  We ensure that all of our athletes have the foundation first- good core strength!  We train explosiveness by training young athletes in the Power and Olympic lifts under strict observation.  You will become a stronger, faster, leaner, more explosive athlete in your individual sport!

Strength Training

One of the most important aspects of strength training is ensuring that everyone has the proper form and technique.  This is important for several reasons!  First, you may be performing the exercise incorrectly which could cause some muscles to be overloaded, and others to remain undertrained and weak!  Secondly, while you may not have a problem with lighter weights, it can lead to strains, sprains, tears or worse when you start increasing your weights to get bigger and stronger.  Lastly, not performing strength and power exercises correctly could have you performing way under your current potential!  What athlete doesn't want to add 5 or 10 lbs. just by properly utilizing their feet in a bench press?!  Don't take it from me though....take it from someone i've helped!

Steven Fulem is a brave man who felt the calling to join the Police Academy here in Pittsburgh. He had excelled in all of the physical requirements except one...the max bench press!  At the Police Academy you must be able to bench press your body weight as a requirement for graduation.  Steven was having trouble with this and contacted me on November 4th to seek professional help.  I told Steven with his test 10 days away it would be hard to make any strength improvements in that time, but I could look at his form and correct his technique, which should help him.  Steven was very close...he weighed about 182 at the time and that's bench birdwhat he had to push...but was stuck at about 170.  Another way to beat this was to make the amount of weight he had to push less, so I gave him some eating tips to help him lose weight!   I corrected Steven's technique and form and gave him a few exercises to do on his own to help strengthen some of the secondary muscles involved with a bench press.  I was excited to hear from him on the day of his test that he had passed!  He had lost a few pounds and was able to get down on the bench and push up 178 with no problem!  All I had done was to teach him the proper way to bench, which not many people take the time to learn or understand!  You have to ensure that you use your feet, keep a high chest with a slight arch in your back, keep your core tight, and control the weight all the way through both eccentric and concentric contractions!

Here is what Steven had to say!

Josh and Fit Fx,

Thank you very much for all of your help. You are by far the best person I ever had help me train for weightlifting. You were very patient, understanding,  and made it very simple to learn without any derogatory comments some trainers use. Without your help I would never have been able to pass my test this month.  You were able to correct my lifting form and increase my bench press by 10lbs in only 2 weeks, also restoring confidence in myself.

Thank you,

Steven A. Fulem

We love to help anyone and everyone understand first how to perform the lifts correctly to maximize their time and effort.  Then we can work with them to ensure that they progress with those lifts so that they gain the strength and power that they desire to.

“I have been working with Josh for almost two years now and I love it! I have to say that what I like most is that he listens to me and my requests and designs workouts that keep me from getting bored. I never really worked out before on my own, but with Josh he pushes me to try new exercises I never thought I could even do. We have even started boxing, which has proved to be a great stress reliever! I have felt myself get a lot stronger, I have more energy, and I have a whole new outlook on staying healthy. Whatever your goals are, I know Josh makes reaching those goals fun and exciting, just like he has done for me!”
